Joseph gripped the wheel a little tighter as he pressed the gas pedal to the floor. He felt a surge of energy in the face of such danger. His focus heightened, and his brain cleared. This is what he was born to do.
He glanced over at Sierra, who gripped the armrest. This was not what she was born to do.
“Hang in there. I got this,” he said, keeping his voice calm.
The car stayed on their bumper. Maybe the driver was just someone who got a thrill out of following too close, but he doubted it. They’d probably been followed from Scenic View. Traffic had been heavy and the tail hadn’t had an opportunity to get to them on the way to the airport. But now, in the darkness of the night, they were the only two cars on the road.
Sierra gazed at him for a long moment before glancing over her shoulder.
He’d felt a spark pass between them earlier at the airport. The heat had ruled his emotions for only a moment. He was in Scenic View to do a job. He reminded himself that the number one rule of undercover work was not to form attachments.
“What should we do?” Terror permeated her voice.
Their car topped out at about eighty. He couldn’t make it go any faster. “Let’s just stay the course.”
They entered a canyon. The road became curvier and the drop-off rocky and extreme. He hugged the inside of the curve as he turned the wheel. The other car, some sort of sports model, handled the curves with more agility.
It tapped their bumper just as they hit a straight patch of road. Their car shook from the impact but remained on the road.
The other car pulled up beside them on the two-lane. It was too dark to see the other driver. The car eased sideways toward them. The mountain that the road had been cut through filled Sierra’s window. Up ahead, a set of headlights loomed toward them as a car appeared around a curve. The sports car dropped back behind them.
The car coming in the opposite direction whizzed past them.
The sports car hit their bumper twice. Joseph veered into the other lane, coming close to the edge of the steep drop-off. Adrenaline surged through his body as he turned the wheel to get back into his own lane.
Sierra gripped the armrest and pressed her head against the seat.
A sign flashed a warning that the road up ahead was curvy and that they needed to slow down. The other car remained glued to their back end.
Sierra checked her seat belt.
He couldn’t slow down. The yellow lines on the highway zoomed by. He maneuvered into the curve and out of it as another serpentine curve loomed in front of him.
His pulse drummed in his ears. He felt like he was enveloped in a bubble as he focused on keeping his speed up and hugging the winding road. The car bumped them again, this time with more force.
His car was propelled into the opposite lane.
